Justice Mahanil Prasantha De Silva was formally sworn in before His Excellency the President, Hon. Russ Kun, MP, at the President’s office today, on the 24th October.
Justice De Silva embarked on his legal career in 1995 when he took on the role of a Magistrate in the Sri Lankan Judiciary. Throughout his illustrious career, Justice Mahanil Prasantha De Silva held various pivotal positions, including Magistrate, District Judge, and High Court Judge, presiding over Provincial and Commercial Courts in different regions of the country. His utmost dedication and commitment culminated in his appointment as a Judge in the Court of Appeal in Sri Lanka. In total, he served as a judicial officer for an impressive 28 years.
In addition to his judicial responsibilities, Justice De Silva assumed significant administrative roles. In 2009, he was appointed as the Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission, and in 2018, he took on the role of Deputy Director at the Sri Lanka Judges’ Institute. An enthusiastic advocate of legal literature, Justice De Silva authored numerous articles and books. He played a pivotal role in revitalizing the Judge’s Journal, a renowned legal publication in Sri Lanka, serving as its editor for four volumes. His commitment to legal scholarship was further demonstrated by his achievement of a Master of Law in Commercial Law from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.
His Excellency, the President of Nauru, extended congratulations to Justice De Silva and expressed gratitude to the Nauru Court of Appeal for their commitment to upholding the rule of law. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by the Minister for Justice, Hon. Pyon Deiye MP, who expressed his appreciation for the services provided by the Court of Appeal. He underscored the significance of having a formidable bench for the Court of Appeal.
